Pakistan's partition from British India in August 1947 created an immediate currency crisis — the new state had no mint of its own and initially relied on the Reserve Bank of India to handle monetary affairs under a temporary arrangement. Pattern coins struck that year were exploratory, produced to test designs and materials before permanent coinage infrastructure was established. The Karachi mint would not open until 1948.
KM#Pn2 as a second pattern indicates at least one prior design was rejected.
