Bengkulu — the remote southwestern Sumatra residency that the British once called Bencoolen and held for over a century before handing it to the Dutch in 1824 — issued this note during the Indonesian National Revolution, when the newly proclaimed Republic was fighting for survival against returning Dutch forces. Central banking infrastructure was nonexistent outside Java, and regional administrations were left to fund themselves. Sub-provincial emergency issues like this one filled the gap, authorized locally and circulating within tightly bounded geographic areas.
The official stamp is the only security measure, which tells you everything about the conditions under which it was produced.
