The Pemerintah Revolusioner Republik Indonesia — the PRRI — was a rebel government declared in February 1958 by dissident military commanders and civilian politicians in Sumatra, operating in direct opposition to Sukarno's Jakarta administration. It was recognized by no foreign government and suppressed militarily within roughly two years. That this breakaway authority issued its own currency series at all reflects how seriously its leadership took the project of building parallel state institutions.

The 1959 date places these notes in the rebellion's terminal phase — Indonesian Army operations had effectively dismantled the PRRI's territorial control by mid-1958, and most surviving notes never circulated in any meaningful sense.
