By 1964, Indonesia's monetary situation was deteriorating rapidly — Sukarno's government was running severe deficits, and the money supply was expanding at a pace that would eventually trigger hyperinflation by the mid-1960s. This note is a product of that fiscal pressure: small denominations printed domestically at Percetakan Kebayoran were churned out in volume as the purchasing power of the rupiah collapsed.
Percetakan Kebayoran was one of the few state printing facilities capable of producing currency in-country, a point of nationalist pride under Sukarno's Guided Economy — though the quality constraints of domestic production are evident across the series.
