Volaterrae — modern Volterra in Tuscany — was among the northernmost Etruscan cities to produce struck bronze coinage, and its issues are notably scarce compared to the prolific mints of Etruria's southern centers. This sextans belongs to a value series almost certainly produced to facilitate military logistics and mercenary payments during a period when Rome was consolidating control over the region through the Second Punic War's precursor conflicts. Production at Volaterrae appears to have been short-lived and deliberately limited.
The Haeberlin reference places this piece within aes grave tradition, though Volaterrae's fabric sits closer to central Italian struck bronze than true cast coinage.
