Tanzania's first shilingi coinage followed directly from independence and the dissolution of the East African Currency Board, which had issued a shared shilling across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika since 1921. The Bank of Tanzania was established in 1966 specifically to sever that monetary union and assert independent currency control — this coin belongs to that inaugural series. The long run through 1984 masks significant inflation pressure in the later years, when copper-nickel coins of this size became increasingly expensive to produce relative to face value.
