Additional information

Malawi achieved independence from Britain on 6 July 1964, and the Reserve Bank issued its first coinage almost immediately — a deliberate assertion of national currency distinct from the Rhodesia and Nyasaland series it replaced. The shilling denomination was retained from the colonial system pending decimalization, which came in 1971 when Malawi converted to the kwacha and tambala, rendering this series obsolete after just a few years of circulation.
