Zimbabwe reintroduced the shilling denomination in 2014 as part of a multi-currency basket system after the catastrophic hyperinflation of the late 2000s had rendered the Zimbabwean dollar worthless — the central bank had printed a 100 trillion dollar note before finally abandoning the currency in 2009. By 2017, the Bond Coins series, of which this is a part, were officially pegged one-to-one with the US dollar, a fiction the market increasingly refused to accept.
The Harrier's appearance on a Zimbabwean circulation coin is a direct reference to the aircraft's operational history with the Air Force of Zimbabwe during the 1980s.
