Greenland's wartime currency situation was genuinely improvised. When Germany occupied Denmark in April 1940, the island was effectively cut off from Copenhagen, and Governor Eske Brun assumed autonomous administrative authority under American protection. These stamped notes were an emergency local solution — existing stock overprinted with an oval control stamp to authenticate them for continued use when proper resupply from Denmark was impossible.
The Type II designation distinguishes the stamp variation, a detail that matters to specialists since multiple stamp configurations were applied to circulating stock at different points. SIEG SD#80 is among the more systematically documented of Greenland's wartime improvised issues, though surviving examples vary considerably in stamp clarity.
