| Obverse description | Enthroned frontal effigy of Saint Ermengol (Sant Ermengau), Bishop of Urgell, depicted in full pontifical vestments including mitre and cope, raising his right hand in blessing and holding a crozier in his left. A nimbus surrounds the bishop's head, emphasizing his saintly status. To the lower left of the throne, a small architectural vignette with water alludes to the legend of the saint's death at a bridge. A floral spray appears to the lower right of the figure. The circular Latin legend SANCTVS ERMENGARDVS D M EPS VRGELLENSIS runs along the periphery, separated from the central design by a beaded border, with the engraver's name TERUGGI also present in the field. |

Andorra had no official coinage of its own until 1976, when the General Council authorized the first national issues — largely as collector pieces, since French francs and Spanish pesetas handled everyday transactions. The Sobirana series was conceived partly to assert a distinct national identity at a moment when Andorra was quietly modernizing its medieval co-principality structure ahead of formal constitutional reform. Saint Ermengol, the 11th-century Bishop of Urgell credited with building bridges across the Valira river, was a natural choice for a fledgling monetary program that needed locally resonant iconography.
