Part of Peru's "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" circulation commemorative program, which began in 2010 and systematically rotated regional flora, fauna, and cultural heritage across the standard one-sol coin. The American crocodile population centered around the Tumbes region represents one of the southernmost viable populations on the Pacific coast of South America, and its inclusion in the series reflected ongoing conservation pressure — the species has been protected under Peruvian law since the 1970s.
