Jaloliddini Rumi — known in the West simply as Rumi — was born in Balkh in 1207, in what is now northern Afghanistan, and spent much of his life in Konya under the Sultanate of Rum. His connection to Tajikistan is primarily linguistic and cultural: the Persian-language literary tradition he represents is central to Tajik national identity, which the post-Soviet state has worked deliberately to reinforce through exactly this kind of commemorative output. The 2007 issue marked 800 years since his birth.
