The stampee was a cut and countermarked fragment of Spanish colonial silver, deliberately debased by alloying or simply worn beyond recovery, pressed into service during a chronic small-change shortage that plagued the British Caribbean throughout the late eighteenth century. Saint Vincent's monetary situation was particularly acute — the island's plantation economy generated substantial trade but almost no reliable petty coinage, forcing colonial authorities to authorize these makeshift billon pieces rather than wait on London's chronically slow supply responses. The Type II designation distinguishes a second countermark application, suggesting at least some of these pieces were re-validated after initial circulation.
