Obverse description At center, the arms of Ecuador rendered in high relief against a mirror-like proof field: an oval shield depicting Mount Chimborazo, the Guayas River, and a steamship, surmounted by a condor with wings spread. The shield is flanked by four national flags and palm and laurel branches. The arc legend REPÚBLICA DEL ECUADOR appears above, while the denomination UN SUCRE is inscribed in the lower field. The silver fineness LEI 0.999 is positioned to the lower right.

Manuela Sáenz, the Quito-born revolutionary who served as Simón Bolívar's intelligence chief and is credited with foiling at least one assassination attempt against him in 1828, was formally recognized by Ecuador as a national hero only in 2010 — one year before this coin's release. The timing was deliberate. Ecuador's government under Rafael Correa was actively rehabilitating figures who complicated the standard male-centric independence narrative.

The sucre as a currency had ceased circulation in 2000 when Ecuador dollarized its economy, making this a commemorative-only issue with no monetary function whatsoever.
