Manuela Sáenz, the Quito-born revolutionary who served as Simón Bolívar's intelligence chief and is credited with foiling at least one assassination attempt against him in 1828, was formally recognized by Ecuador as a national hero only in 2010 — one year before this coin's release. The timing was deliberate. Ecuador's government under Rafael Correa was actively rehabilitating figures who complicated the standard male-centric independence narrative.
The sucre as a currency had ceased circulation in 2000 when Ecuador dollarized its economy, making this a commemorative-only issue with no monetary function whatsoever.
