Bangladesh's independence coinage occupies an odd place in the numismatic record — the country declared independence in March 1971, but the Liberation War continued until December of that year under Pakistani military occupation, with the formal establishment of Bangladesh Bank following only after the war's end. This 1991 silver issue marks the twentieth anniversary of that independence, struck nearly two decades after the events it commemorates.

The .925 fineness places it among the finer silver commemoratives of the period, though Bangladesh issued relatively few such pieces.
