Cambodia's 1847 tical coinage was produced under Norodom's predecessor Ang Duong, who had been restored to the throne by Siamese intervention and was actively trying to modernize royal administration — partly to resist both Siamese and Vietnamese encroachment. The thick flan variety of KM#36 is distinguished from the thin flan issue by a measurably greater planchet depth, a consequence of differing blank preparation rather than a revised specification. The two varieties circulated simultaneously and are catalogued separately.
