Cambodia's 1847 tical coinage was produced under Norodom's predecessor Ang Duong, who had been restored to the throne by Siamese intervention and was navigating a kingdom effectively caught between Siamese and Vietnamese imperial pressure. The thin flan variety of KM#37 is a recognized production variant, almost certainly the result of inconsistent planchet preparation rather than an intentional specification change — Cambodian mint practice of the period was not the controlled operation that European mints ran.
Ang Duong would later open correspondence directly with Napoleon III, a diplomatic gambit that contributed to French interest in the region within a decade.
