Resplendor is a small municipality in the Doce River valley, Minas Gerais, and this note belongs to a modern wave of Brazilian municipal scrip — locally issued complementary currency intended to stimulate spending within a defined geographic area. The Ubérrima is named after the Ubérrima River, a local tributary. These schemes operate under a framework tolerated, though not formally authorized, by the Banco Central do Brasil, provided they function as social currency rather than a substitute for the real.
2024 production, printed locally rather than by a security printer, which is entirely consistent with how Brazilian community currencies of this type are typically manufactured.
