North Korea's 1992 currency reform introduced a parallel note system distinguishing between domestic citizens and foreign visitors — a distinction enforced through different series rather than different denominations. This 1 Won belongs to the domestic citizen series, identifiable by the absence of the colored serial number suffixes used on notes intended for foreign exchange shops.
The watermark is the primary security feature, modest by contemporary standards but consistent with DPRK printing practices of the period. Production is generally attributed to state printing facilities, though the DPRK has never formally disclosed its note manufacturing arrangements.
