Akrotiri and Dhekelia — the two Sovereign Base Areas retained by Britain under the 1960 Treaty of Establishment when Cyprus gained independence — have never issued circulating coinage. The Xeros was a proposed local currency unit that never advanced beyond the pattern stage, conceived partly in response to the administrative awkwardness of the SBAs straddling the euro zone without formally adopting it. This piece is one of a small number of pattern strikes produced for evaluation.
