The "Empire Centrafricain" designation makes this a narrow-issue curiosity. Jean-Bédel Bokassa proclaimed himself Emperor in December 1977, and BEAC was obligated to produce currency reflecting the new state name — a logistical and political headache for a regional central bank serving multiple countries simultaneously. His reign collapsed in September 1979 when French forces intervened, meaning notes carrying the imperial title were issued for under two years before the Central African Republic name was restored.
The high denomination and short imperial window keep surviving examples relatively scarce in circulated grades.
