The regional emission series produced across Sumatra in 1947–1949 represents one of the more chaotic chapters in Indonesian monetary history. With the Dutch blockade cutting off supplies and communications between Java and the outer islands, local ORI (Oeang Republik Indonesia) notes were authorized and printed under improvised conditions by individual residencies and district administrations. Membang Muda, a district in the Riau interior, was among the smaller issuing authorities — which is precisely why this denomination surfaces so rarely.
The official stamp serves as the primary authentication mechanism, a telling indication of how limited the available security infrastructure was. Pick lists over a dozen distinct regional Sumatran variants in the 319 series alone.
