Obverse description The Portuguese arms — a cross formed by five escutcheons each bearing five bezants (quinas) arranged in saltire, set within a plain field. The circular legend REPVBLICA PORTVGVESA runs along the upper periphery, flanked by two small floral ornaments at the base. The date of issue appears in the lower field between the ornamental stops.
