Cobija was Bolivia's only Pacific port in 1873, a remote and underpopulated customs town whose commercial activity barely justified a regional bank branch, let alone a private note issue. The Banco Nacional de Bolivia operated several regional branches in this period, each authorized to issue notes independently — which is why P#S186 carries a Cobija designation rather than the more prominent La Paz or Potosí branches.
ABNC plates from this era were frequently shared or adapted across Latin American clients, so the base engraving may predate this specific contract. Cobija itself was ceded to Chile following the War of the Pacific, effectively ending any meaningful circulation of branch-specific Bolivian paper from this issuer after 1879.
