The Banco Nacional de Bolivia was established in 1871 with Chilean and Bolivian capital, operating from Antofagasta at a time when that city was still Bolivian territory — it would fall to Chilean forces in 1879 during the opening moves of the War of the Pacific, effectively ending the bank's operations under Bolivian jurisdiction. This note predates that annexation by five years.
ABNC printed extensively for South American issuers throughout this period, and the Bolivia series followed the firm's standard contract arrangement: plates cut in New York, sheets shipped to the issuing bank for signature and release. Pick S193 is genuinely scarce, with surviving examples rarely appearing at auction.
