São Tomé and Príncipe's 1929 pattern coinage was produced as Portugal explored a dedicated colonial currency for the islands, which had relied on metropolitan Portuguese issues and irregular local substitutes. The Gomes E1.01 designation marks this as the first recorded essai in that series — a trial piece, never approved for circulation, that documents a monetary reform proposal that ultimately stalled.
