Obverse description Left-facing laureate effigy of Liberty, her flowing hair adorned with an olive wreath, rendered in high relief with fine draping visible at the truncation. A small engraver's signature appears at the base of the bust. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA curves along the upper periphery, while the date 1929 is positioned in the lower field, flanked by two small cross ornaments. The design is framed by a continuous inner beaded border.

São Tomé and Príncipe's 1929 pattern coinage was produced as Portugal explored a dedicated colonial currency for the islands, which had relied on metropolitan Portuguese issues and irregular local substitutes. The Gomes E1.01 designation marks this as the first recorded essai in that series — a trial piece, never approved for circulation, that documents a monetary reform proposal that ultimately stalled.
