The Chambre de Commerce de l'Hérault issued zinc emergency coinage during World War I when the French government's wartime metal requisitions and a severe shortage of small-denomination specie left regional commerce effectively paralyzed. Chambers of commerce across France were authorized to fill the gap, producing locally circulating necessities — the Hérault issues among the less common provincial examples.
Zinc was the material of last resort, prone to corrosion and difficult to strike cleanly.
