Nicaragua's Banco Nacional functioned simultaneously as both the central bank and a commercial lending institution through most of this period — an arrangement that drew repeated criticism from the IMF and contributed to monetary instability during the Somoza years. The De La Rue contract for this series was part of a broader Central American printing relationship the firm maintained through the 1950s, supplying notes to several republics whose own facilities couldn't handle intaglio work.
