Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of Macedonian independence from Yugoslavia, this piece was struck while the country was in the middle of an armed insurgency. The 2001 National Liberation Army conflict — fought between the Macedonian security forces and ethnic Albanian rebels — ended only months after this coin's release, with the Ohrid Framework Agreement signed in August of that year.
Mintage figures for this type are extremely low, consistent with the National Bank's limited output of commemorative gold throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
