The Bahrain Currency Board was established in 1964 specifically to replace the Indian rupee, which had circulated in Bahrain as legal tender for decades — a dependency that became untenable after India's own currency pressures in the early 1960s made external rupee holdings a liability. This 10 Dinar note belongs to the first series issued under the new authority, making it one of the founding instruments of Bahraini monetary independence.
De La Rue's production for this series is clean and technically conservative. The watermark is the primary security measure — modest by later standards, but sufficient for a first issuance aimed at establishing public confidence rapidly.
