The Great Arab Revolt of 1916 was coordinated in large part by Sharif Hussein bin Ali of Mecca, who launched the uprising against Ottoman rule on June 10th of that year with British backing — including the famous involvement of T.E. Lawrence. Jordan's Hashemite monarchy traces its direct lineage to Hussein, making the centennial a dynastic commemoration as much as a historical one.
