The United Arab Emirates Currency Board was established in 1973, the same year this note was issued — meaning the entire first series, of which this is a part, constituted the UAE's inaugural paper currency following the federation's formal consolidation after independence from Britain in 1971. The dirham replaced the Bahraini dinar and the Qatar and Dubai riyal simultaneously across the seven emirates, a logistical undertaking that required a functioning note series to be ready at launch.
Thomas De La Rue handled the full first series. The watermark is the sole security measure — no metallic strip, no UV features — which reflects both the technology of the period and the short intended lifespan of the Currency Board itself, which was superseded by the UAE Central Bank in 1980.
