São Tomé and Príncipe's switch to De La Rue Safeguard polymer for this series marked a notable step for one of the world's smallest and least-trafficked currency systems — the dobra had already survived a 1977 redenomination and a 1990 currency reform, and the island economy's heavy dependence on imports means notes circulate hard and wear quickly. Polymer was a practical answer to that problem, not a prestige decision.
