Suriname redenominated in January 2004, replacing the guilder at 1,000:1 — a ratio that reflects just how badly the currency had deteriorated through the 1990s, when inflation peaked above 600 percent annually. The dollar series that followed, including this note, was produced by Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig, a house with deep experience printing for smaller sovereign issuers across the Caribbean and South America.
The holographic band on this series was a deliberate upgrade over earlier Surinamese issues, which had relied on more basic security features and proved vulnerable to counterfeiting in regional circulation.
