The Marshall Islands began issuing legal tender collector coins in 1986 under a monetization program that had no functional domestic currency infrastructure — the US dollar circulates as the official currency, making these pieces commemoratives in every practical sense. The C-47 Skytrain issue honors a transport aircraft that flew extensively across the Pacific theater during World War II, a conflict whose island-hopping campaign turned Marshallese atolls into strategic flashpoints and left Kwajalein and Enewetak as two of the most heavily contested landings of 1944.
