Nauru's 2006 collector series leaned heavily on UNESCO World Heritage Sites as subject matter — a common strategy among Pacific microstates whose mints produce coins with no meaningful domestic circulation. The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, completed in its Romanesque core by the early 12th century, became one of medieval Europe's most important pilgrimage destinations after relics attributed to Saint James were enshrined there in the 9th century. The Camino de Santiago routes that fed traffic to the cathedral shaped entire towns across northern Iberia.
