Issued to mark the first anniversary of Bahamian independence — which had not yet actually occurred. The Bahamas struck this gold series in 1971 while still a British Crown Colony, anticipating the independence that would not formally arrive until July 10, 1973. The coins were produced by the Franklin Mint under contract, part of a broader collector-oriented program that flooded the market with Bahamian gold during this period and ultimately suppressed secondary-market premiums for decades.
