The Montserrat Oriole exists on one island and nowhere else — a species pushed to the brink by the 1995 eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, which buried roughly half of Montserrat under ash and pyroclastic flow and eliminated most of the bird's lowland habitat overnight. The surviving population retreated to the Centre Hills, where it remains critically endangered. Fewer than 500 breeding pairs are estimated to persist.
Montserrat itself issues no independent coinage, making the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank the sole monetary authority for this series.
