Comments

Ultramar Ltd., the Canadian downstream petroleum retailer, issued gift certificates denominated in dollars for use at its service stations — a practice common among fuel retailers in the late 1990s and early 2000s before prepaid card infrastructure made paper instruments obsolete. These certificates occupy an odd cataloging category: not legal tender, not a true scrip, but close enough in form and function to attract notaphilic interest.

The 2001 dating places this squarely in Ultramar's pre-Couche-Tard ownership period — Alimentation Couche-Tard completed its acquisition of Ultramar's Canadian network from Valero Energy in 2012.
