Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Namibia at centre, featuring a quartered shield supported by two oryx antelopes as heraldic supporters, surmounted by an African fish eagle with outstretched wings. The motto ribbon at the base of the arms bears the legend UNITY LIBERTY JUSTICE. The date 2009 appears below the arms in the field, and the circular legend REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA is inscribed along the lower periphery. The mirrored proof fields provide strong contrast against the finely detailed relief.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued to mark the centenary of the 1904–1908 Herero and Nama genocide, in which German colonial forces under General Lothar von Trotha killed an estimated 65,000–80,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama people — the twentieth century's first recognized genocide. The coin's gold insert references the mineral wealth that made German South West Africa strategically worth holding in the first place.

Von Trotha's Vernichtungsbefehl, the extermination order issued in October 1904, was eventually rescinded by Berlin but not before the bulk of the killing was done.
