The National Bank of Egypt was founded in 1898 with British capital and a concession from the Khedive, making it both the country's bank of issue and a vehicle for British financial control during the occupation. This note belongs to the inaugural series — P#8 is among the earliest issues the bank ever produced, printed by De La Rue in London before any domestic printing infrastructure existed.

De La Rue's work for the NBE in this period used intaglio printing with security watermarking woven into the cotton substrate — relatively sophisticated for the region at the time. The series ran with minimal design changes for decades, which means date and signature combinations are the primary differentiators for specialists working this issue.
