The 1986 series marked one of De La Rue's early printings for Swaziland following the country's transition away from the Rand currency union — Swaziland had pegged the Lilangeni to the South African Rand at par since 1974, a relationship that persisted through this issue and continues to the present day. The peg has always complicated the practical argument for maintaining a distinct currency, yet the Central Bank pressed forward with successive domestic issues regardless.
B.S. Dlamini served as Governor, H.B.B. Oliver as Deputy — an unusual pairing in that Oliver's tenure as a signing officer was relatively brief within the broader signature sequence for this series.
