Banco Nacional Ultramarino was chartered specifically to serve Portugal's overseas territories, and by 1921 its operations spanned Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé, Timor, and Portuguese India simultaneously — this note circulated within that network rather than in metropolitan Portugal, where it had no legal tender status. The Pick 35 belongs to the Mozambique issue of the series.
Bradbury, Wilkinson printed the note at their New Malden works. The firm was among the most technically accomplished intaglio security printers of the period, and their work for colonial currency clients was extensive through the interwar decades.
