Reverse description Central device consists of the Portuguese armillary sphere, its meridian ring bearing the Portuguese royal shield with the characteristic five escutcheons and bezants, set against a cross of the Order of Christ. The circular legend REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA runs along the upper and lateral periphery, with the date 1953 placed in the exergue flanked by two pellets. The word PROVA (proof/pattern) appears in the left field adjacent to the sphere, identifying this piece as a pattern strike. A beaded inner border encircles the entire design.
