Obverse description Facing bust of Jean Parisot de la Valette, Grand Master of the Order of Malta, depicted in armour with a beard, centrally positioned in the field. The date 2004 appears below the bust, accompanied by the mintmaster's mark and the engraver's initials VL. A circular legend reading PRUEBA TRIAL ESSAI PROBE frames the upper portion of the design, with the name JEAN PARISOT DE LA VALETTE inscribed in an arc above the effigy. The issuer name MALTA appears at the base, with decorative eight-pointed Maltese cross motifs punctuating the legend.

Additional information

Malta struck these specimen pieces in 2003–2004 as part of its pre-accession euro coinage program, produced before the country formally joined the European Union in May 2004. They carried no legal tender status and could not circulate — they existed solely to satisfy numismatic demand and to document Malta's preparation for currency changeover, which would not actually occur until January 2008.
