The Banque d'Emission du Rwanda et du Burundi was a transitional institution — created to manage monetary affairs during the brief window between Belgian colonial withdrawal and the establishment of separate central banks in each country. Rwanda and Burundi had both become independent in 1962, yet continued sharing a currency and this joint issuing authority for several years afterward, an unusual arrangement driven more by practical inertia than policy design.
By 1964, the end was already in sight. Rwanda introduced its own franc in 1964, effectively rendering this series short-lived almost from the moment of printing. Thomas De La Rue produced the notes in London under contract.
