Beschrijving keerzijde A bold, high-relief effigy of President Grégoire Kayibanda is depicted in a three-quarter facing portrait, turned slightly to the right, with strong modelling of the facial features. The circular legend 'BANQUE · NATIONALE · DU · RWANDA' arcs around the upper periphery, while the date '1964' curves along the lower border. The word 'ESSAI' appears to the right of the portrait, confirming the trial piece status. The engraver's monogram 'CVD' is incised at the base of the truncation, and the signature 'CVC' is visible beneath the portrait.

Aanvullende informatie

Rwanda's 1964 coinage program was developed in the immediate aftermath of independence from Belgian trusteeship, which ended in 1962. The Banque Nationale du Rwanda was still establishing its monetary infrastructure, and multiple pattern strikes in varying compositions were produced to evaluate production feasibility before the circulating series was finalized. Brass was ultimately rejected in favor of other alloys for the issued coinage.

Patterns from this program are essentially unlisted in most standard references, surviving in tiny numbers from official test strikings.
