Austrian municipal notgeld from the First World War period, issued by the rural Salzburg municipality of Bruck im Pinzgau when small-denomination coinage disappeared from circulation almost overnight after 1914. Coin hoarding hit alpine communities particularly hard — metallic currency drained toward urban centers and military procurement, leaving village economies dependent on whatever paper the local council could print and back on its own authority.
The Anton Posch signature identifies a local official rather than a central banking functionary. That single signature and the absence of any major printing house distinguishes this from state-issued emergency currency.
